Love’s Not Color Blind
with Kevin & Antoinette
(Season 3 | Episode 121)
[TESSA] Kevin and Antoinette are a couple. A polyamorous couple… with children. And from what you will hear in this episode… this all works… just fine.
When they were first carving out this lifestyle for themselves they didn’t even know it was a “thing.” Then they found the polyamory community in Philadelphia. And that really opened up their eyes to so many possibilities. And, just for the record, the kids are well aware of their parents’ relationships.
Kevin and Antoinette Patterson are active members of the Philadelphia polyamory community. These two have been practicing ethical nonmonogamy since August of 2002 after opening up a relationship that eventually became marriage.
Love’s Not Color Blind (Kevin Patterson)
The issues that make monogamous dating daunting for people of color—shaming and exclusion by white partners, being fetishized, having realities of everyday racism ignored—occur in polyamorous relationships too, and trying “not to see race” only makes it worse. To make polyamorous communities inclusive, we must all acknowledge our part in perpetuating racism and listen to people of color. Love’s Not Color Blind puts forward the framework—through research, anecdotal testimony, and analogy—for understanding, identifying, and confronting racism within polyamorous communities.
